Crater Lake

Crater Lake is an amazing place that everyone should take the time to visit. Before this trip, I did a lot of research online looking for photos that would give me a good idea of photographic vantage points. I really did not find what I was looking for on the web, and now I know why. Crater Lake is extremely difficult to photograph. It's a 5 mile by 6 mile lake inside of a volcano. When it is sunny out, the lake is an unbelievable blue that you could not imagine. From a photographer's standpoint, the best time of day for shooting is early morning and early evening. There's just one problem, the sun is below the volcano so you don't get to take advantage of that! I found that all of my favorite photos came from one day, and that was when a storm rolled in. I think most of my photos have more to do with documenting what is there, rather than being my typical scenic images. Please read my comments on the images, there will be quite a few! All images are for sale, so if you see anything you like, please contact me.

  • Stellar's Jay, This guy was easy birding, he came right into our camp! Oh and by the way, if you're camping in a tent like we did, be sure to bring the appropriate sleeping gear. Nights are very cold, temps dropping into the 40's. And yes, that is during summer weather up there!

  • Clark's Nutcracker, these guys have become one of my favorite new birds. They are all over the place up here, and they let you know it with their antics and their screaming!

  • Haven't looked this guy up yet, but I think it is an immature that was hanging out on the ground with it's sibling.

  • Another good note, if you are visiting Crater Lake, the smaller the vehicle, the better. The roads have no edge in a lot of places. It made me nervous being the passenger!

  • The terrain is very different, it's as though different elements are battling with one another. Another note, it's VERY dusty here. Hiking really kicks it up, and even after the trip my chest hurt from breathing it all in.

  • Phantom Ship- I took this image without the polarizer and the only editing I did was to convert it from a raw file. The water truly is that blue!!
