Mt. Rainier-Oct. '09 #3

Kudos to my husband who called me yesterday early in the morning to suggest I head up to the mountains. I knew it was one of the few days when it wasn't going to snow or rain up there, so off I went. I have always said that Grand Teton NP is my favorite place on earth, and it is! Having said that, I have to say that Mt. Rainier is rivaling that statement with all of it's spectacular beauty! I headed up to Tipsoo Lake first, and found it covered in snow. If you remember my pics from last Saturday, it was still full of fall color, so winter happens quick up there! On the way down to Stevens Canyon, I spotted a beautiful fox, who stuck around long enough for me to capture some images of him. After that, I headed toward Paradise, only to find the road closed. I was disappointed, but opted to take the Grove of the Patriarchs trail eastern side, and was rewarded for my choice! Temp going in-40 degrees, coming out-27 degrees! Not too cold for me, but with the upper elevations and less oxygen, your lungs sure do feel it! You won't hear me complain though, I'll be back for more!!

  • The most work I have ever done on one image by far!! This is (5 images) 15 exposures layered and tonemapped for HDR. They were then stitched together and finally tweaked in photoshop. I am in love with panoramics now and plan on practicing a bit more this week. Isn't it amazing how a new aspect of photography can make you feel like a little kid in a candy store? I know, I'm strange, but just call me a photography nerd, that's what I am. LOL!

  • Every time I've driven this route, I've wanted to take this photo. There are no pull outs on the road though, so this time I pulled off where I could, and walked on the side of the road. I love how the gold trees are still in color leading down the river bed, and how all of the trees were frosted this time. I've never seen the same weather pattern twice, so you can look forward to more images from this location!

  • As you drive closer to Chinook Pass, the snow gets much heavier and stunningly beautiful. You truly do feel as though you are visiting a magical place.

  • When I first saw this guy, he was on the side of the road. I pulled off and changed my lenses quickly but couldn't find him. I was about to give up when his head popped up out of the snow. He had climbed down the cliff and was trotting through the snow below me.

  • I was rewarded for my search, when he popped back up on the road within 25 feet of me. It is amazing how just watching this guy play in the snow made my day that much brighter!

  • This is where he popped back up before he ran across the street and up the other side of the mountain. Don't worry, I watched for cars for him!

On my way into the Grove of the Patriarchs trail, Eastern side. No snow over here!
