Mt. Rainier Sept 2011

Inspiration has been low for me this year. With our Summer running a month and a half behind, there were no wildflowers to be photographed in July and August. When summer did arrive, it came with clear blue skies and sunshine. We know as photographers that this is SO boring to photograph in!! The other day I received my latest Outdoor Photographer magazine, and I finally received the inspiration I so desperately needed. Star trails under a full moon in which to light up the landscape. Last night just happened to be a full moon, so I drove up to Paradise to the perfect spot at the top of Myrtle Falls. After spending a few hours entertaining myself and the wildlife, I took a nap in my truck and headed back out at sunrise. The curse still continues, the sun rose up through some clouds which diffused the warm glow that we love. By the time it broke free of the clouds, it was too harsh to continue shooting. I headed home at that point, and much to my surprise when exiting the park, the skies were gray and misty. I found some of the drama I was looking for, so stopped at local farms to capture a few images. Inspiration is the key, keep it coming Outdoor Photographer!!!

  • So this is my first experiment with star trails, and it most definitely didn't turn out the way I had hoped. I originally intended to shoot 6 one hour exposures to merge, but as it turned out, the moon was so bright it ended up washing out the stars. I also had an issue with wispy clouds moving in after midnight, also blocking out the stars. This image wound up being 3 one hour exposures. The landscape lit up the way I had hoped, but I will definitely be delving deeper into this subject matter. Anyone feel like sitting on the mountain for 6 hours with me? Also, view the image larger to view the few stars that did appear!!

  • This is the same location as the sun came up. You can see the clouds I was talking about that blocked out my stars!

  • I could barely see when composing this image, so I snapped off multiple exposures to layer for HDR, and was pleasantly surprised with the results!

  • This scene was unbelievably contrasty so I shot 9 exposures again for HDR.

  • Love this capture, it was the only time he really looked my way. They were way too busy munching on the wildflowers!

  • Reflection Lake-my last stop on the way out of the park. This pano is composed of 6 images, 18 exposures layered for HDR and then stitched together. I shot this one as a vertical pano and the next image as a horizontal. It too is comprised of 6 images, 18 exposures. Don't know if I like the b&w or color version, but I think I like the vertical format best!

  • Since everyone liked the color image so much, here is the vertical pano in all it's vibrancy!
