Olympic National Park

The month of May brought a visit from Mom and Sue, and our destination was Olympic National Park. We were hoping for little breaks in the weather, but for the most part just endured lots of rain. Can you really complain though when you are in a rain forest? We spent time at Neah Bay on the Makah Indian Reservation, The Hoh Rain Forest, Ruby Beach, and the Sol Duc Falls trail. I am at my best while in the wilderness, and this park left me in awe at every turn. We hardly made a dent, and I am anticipating a return trip to delve deeper into the park.

  • The first evening was spent at Ruby Beach in the pouring down rain. Luckily, Kalaloch Lodge and our cabin was very close by to dry out all of our gear!

  • Trying to capture the Hoh Rain Forest in camera just doesn't do it justice. It is stunning in it's foliage and color!

  • Look closely and you will see me between the trees. I wanted to show the scale of them and became an ant in the process!

  • We came across this bull and his harem on the way out of the Hoh Rain Forest, and when mom got out of the car to photograph them he made a lunge at her. Not a happy bull!!

  • The day we spent at Neah Bay was the only day that the sun really came out, but of course it made for some major contrasty light. I opted to pull the Fuji out and shoot in infrared, The Cape Flattery trail is spectacular and has a great trail made of stones and wooden boardwalks.

  • Our third night brought the chance of a stunning sunset, but instead an amazing storm rolled in. I have to say I was ecstatic, it was absolutely amazing to experience the sea and clouds in motion. Soaked again, but who cares!!!

  • At twilight I was shooting longer exposures and getting some neat blur with the clouds. Even better was that the sky started to lighten up, and a brief break in the clouds revealed that it was the moon shining through.

  • On the hike back to the car, Sue and I turned around to find the beautiful silhouettes of the trees against the moonlight. I also opted to turn my headlamp off as a few bats flew in a little too close to my face to dine on the bugs flying in to my light. I love bats, but not in 3D!!

  • The Hoh Rain Forest was gorgeous, but I have to say that the Sol Duc area was even more spectacular. Again, trying to capture it in camera does not do it justice.

  • This amazing mist made it's way through the trees, and disappeared immediately after I snapped this image.

  • This view is from the bottom of the trail, and although the tree at the top of the frame was pretty from the trail, it was spectacular from this angle. It and the plant life left you feeling as though you had entered the environment from Avatar. Stunning!!!
